I am currently living in Moratuwa which is already very popular for Wood Industry among the whole country. So as a person living in an area which is filled with furniture shops, I have witnessed the pollution that has occurred due to carpentry sheds and wood factories to the sound while there is a rapid growth in wood industries.
The Wood factories normally starts their work in the morning and carry out their work until evening. They take massive wood trunks and shed them into wood pieces. They use huge machines to cut them into pieces. Those machines release a big noise while trunks are shedding. So around 10 hours per day the sound is polluted, and this thing happens every day. Not only that but also there will be so many lorries carrying Wood trunks every day and there will be traffic at our roads which are not much wide. So, honking noises are evitable in our area for most of the time. It has become normalized to people living in our area. But personally, I know that this is not a good practice because in one hand we destroy our eco system in other hand this may results in many health-related problems.
Among the ill effects of noise pollution, human beings do suffer a lot in comparison with nature and animals. Irony is that the misbehaviors of human beings are the root causes for noise pollution and in meantime, they do suffer from the issues such as high blood pressure, depression, distractions for sleeping, hearing effects, productivity related issues, and sudden attacks because of being panic. The effect of hearing loss is not only a problem for human beings but also for animals. If they lose their hearing, they will be unable to hear important environmental clues and animal signals. The behavioral patterns of animals will also be distracted with the loss of ability to reproduce, and they will abandon territories which have troubled their usual lifestyles. As I mentioned, human beings and animals do suffer prominently, and the growth of plants is also adversely affected due to high level of noises in many areas. Finally, all these issues will raise the imbalance in eco systems within the territory.
Though this problem is not significant, we can’t dismiss this issue hence there are many adverse effects of noise pollution on humans, animals, and plants. Thus, we need to come across with some solutions to reduce these adverse effects. As I think, the first most important alternative for this issue is the social awareness because it is must to educate the public regarding the causes and effects of noise pollution. We can make hand bills, posters and, we can organize programs to inform the people about noise pollution and to inform about the preventive means to get rid from this issue. As the second solution, we can ask the factory owners to design the buildings with soundproof materials and to lubricate the machines and to service them in order to minimize the noise generation. In meantime villagers can request the government to provide noise proof machines when they’re providing new machinery. Nevertheless, all these means are highly expensive and therefore we can recommend people to use ear buds when they are working with machines and, we can recommend people to stay away from the noisy areas as possible as they can. Finally, there is another eco friendly solution for this crisis; we can plant trees and shrubs along the roads and near hospitals and educational institutions etc. We should prioritize social awareness programs and self-protective means; among the solutions I’ve mentioned above.
As I explained above, it is clear that this noise pollution in our area is a serious problem though it is insignificant. As this problem is an unsolved problem for many years, we can assume that the people don’t care this as a problem literary. Hence, we need to come across with the above-mentioned solutions if we desire to overcome this problem in order to minimize health issues and to protect the eco systems within our area.
